“Modern Rebirth of 75mm Prime Lens” - Those are the words of Samyang. I did know of this lens a while before it was launched and I was really looking forward to try it out.It was delayed due to the situation we are in at the moment, but it finally arrived. I have the 85mm F/1.4, but the size between them is big, in both size and weight. So to answer the question right away, yes, there is a place for this lens.
Due to the situation with Covid-19, I have not been able to test the lens in any work situations at all. But I still got to do enough to know how sharp and quick this lens is to use, and it will be much easier to have in your bag on travels etc. And with the price too, it should be an easy choice to get this for your Sony camera.
Another interesting feature on this lens is the Custom Switch. Samyang’s own description;
“Shooting and operation is more intuitive and simple. You can easily select various functions such as Aperture Control Mode from the Switch, and enjoy the shooting mode that suits your personal preference. More functions will be added through firmware update in the future.”
I got to say I really like this feature, and can’t wait to see what more they will add in future firmware updates.
As mentioned earlier, Im not able to perform my work as we are in lock down, but I had a walk around in a small city to test the lens with my A7III. I did test it towards 3 different subjects at F/1.8, F/2.8, F/4 and F/5,6 in that order in the gallery too:
And here is some of the pics I took while walking around in the city too:
All the new Samyang lenses for Sony E is fast and sharp on still images. When it comes to video, it has been a more struggling experience. the 14mm F/2.8 and 35mm F/1.4 has been ok, but the 50 and 85mm has not been good at all (In my experience). But it seems like this 75mm can be very useful for video too. I did some testings with the two settings I always use for mye work. Flexible Spot and Wide. In camera settings are on Fast and Responsive. There are a couple of times in the video where the lens looks like struggling a bit, but that was my error by having the fist too close to the lens.
All in all, I got to say I’ve fallen in love with this little gem of a lens. Its so small, light and compact. Takes no room in the bag at all. I am just looking forward to be able to use this lens when I can return back in the photo pit at a rock concert again. In the meantime, stay safe and stay well!

It also have to be said, I am a Focus Nordic ambassador. They provide me with all my gear. This lens is no exception. But Im still say things how I feel about it and If I don’t like something, I will tell so.
